Alcatel Lucent expand VoIP and IP connectivity into Mediterranean area
VoIP technology as well as mobile, optics telecommunications provider Alcatel-Lucent together with Telecom Egypt (TE), Egypt’s major telecommunications services provider, have released so called TE-NORTH Cable System, managed by 40 Gigabit per second (40G) wavelengths throughout Mediterranean area, therefore, launching very first Mediterranean cable network to ensure commercial services by means of newest 40G technology.
Overall length and expansion of the system is more than 2,200-mile, delivering connectivity thru Abu Talat, Egypt, to Marseille, France, with a detachment to Cyprus, being supported and backed up by other branching units for further expansions in the Mediterranean. This innovative 40G technology factually doubles the original design capacity of the system from 10 Terabits per second to over 20 Terabits per second (Tb/s), in common measurements it could be compared and equal to the transfer of over 32,000 High Definition movies in matter of one single minute, as boasted by companies in the common press release.“Conjoining our sophisticated 40G coherent technology with existing 10G channels makes carriers and operators like Telecom Egypt to better serve their customers and the end-users in the Mediterranean region with excellent speed and bandwidth to experience broadband multimedia services such as video with the highest quality,” said Philippe Dumont, President of Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks SAS. “With our unique mixture of operational expertise and modern features including our versatile system buildup and highly scalable underwater line terminal equipment, we are confident that 40G upgrades can directly support Telecom Egypt’s business.”Previously deployed as part of the original $125 million contract in 2008, Alcatel-Lucent used the latest 1620 Light Manager product, subsequently upgraded to 40G.“Telecom Egypt is very happy to implement on the responsibility of serving the International telecommunications infrastructure along the Asia and Africa to Europe route with innovative proven technological advances” said TE CEO, Mohamed Abdelrehim. “TE-NORTH, with its recent 40G upgrades across the Mediterranean, will enhance the Egyptian user experience as more and more Egyptians celebrate their freedom and humanity online.”
