US-based telco AT&T has revealed that it has awarded two suppliers contracts to provide equipment for its upcoming Long Term Evolution (LTE) rollout; Sweden’s Ericsson and French firm Alcatel-Lucent.
AT&T said in a statement: ‘The selection of the two suppliers paves the way for AT&T's planned field trials of LTE technology later this year, with commercial deployment scheduled to begin in 2011.’

As reported by CommsUpdate on 6 January 2010, AT&T is planning extensive network upgrades in 2010, looking to complete the deployment of the 3.5G HSPA 7.2 standard in 25 of the country's 30 largest markets this year, before upgrading at least 90% of its 3G footprint with the evolution by the end of 2011. Under deal, any 3G equipment provided to the operator by Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent will also be upgradeable to LTE.
