Middle East-based submarine cable operator Gulf Bridge International (GBI) has announced that Batelco, Bahrain's former monopoly telecoms provider, has agreed to provide a landing station for the new undersea cable, GBI Cable System, which is scheduled to launch in 2011.

The new cable is designed to connect all the countries of the Gulf region and provide onward connectivity to Europe and Asia. It has a design capacity of up to five terabits per second on certain sections, aiming to meet the rapid growth in demand that has been forecast for traffic originating and terminating in Gulf.
