The number of broadband internet subscribers in Azerbaijan reached 37,544 at the end of 2009, up by 21,512 users compared to a year earlier, News.az reports, citing the Ministry of Communication and Information Technologies (MCIT).
According to the ministry, the increase in customers was spurred by a fall in the cost of internet tariffs. State-owned fixed line operator BakTelekom, which operates in the capital Baku via its subsidiary BakInternet, accounted for 12,422, or a third, of the country’s total high speed internet subscribers.

In a separate but related story, the MCIT has revealed the number of ADSL ports in Baku will soon be increased by 13,568 to 70,000 through its ongoing programme of digitising automatic telephone switches.
