State-owned Indian telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has launched the country’s first commercial mobile WiMAX services in the Kerala circle, the Economic Times is reporting.
The country’s minister of state for agriculture and consumer affairs, KV Thomas, launched the service, which is utilising technologies provided by Aviat Networks (formerly known as Harris Stratex).

Under the telco’s plans for WiMAX services in Kerala 900 base stations are being deployed across the region, with 450 of those to be set up in the first phase of the project covering all major cities, district headquarters and ‘important’ towns; the first phase is expected to cost INR1 billion (USD21.68 million). BSNL will offer two WiMAX tariffs, both of which will offer downlink speeds of up to 2Mbps; Home Plan has a monthly charge of INR999, while the Business Plan will cost INR1,999 per month.
