BSNL selects franchisees for urban WiMAX rollout
Indian state-owned telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will reportedly ink deals that will see four local companies become WiMAX franchisees for the telco in urban areas, according to the Hindu Business Line.
The selected companies will offer commercial WiMAX services in 16 circles through using BSNL’s franchise model, and of the four companies selected Teracom, whose main technology partner is US-based Cisco, will operate in eight circles – Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh (East), Assam, Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) and the North East. Adishwar will operate in the Calcutta circle, while Ampules won the right to offer WiMAX services in Chennai, Haryana, West Bengal and Himachal Pradesh; both companies will provide services in partnership with Israel’s Alvarion. The final company, Take Solutions will work with Chinese vendor ZTE to roll out WiMAX-based broadband services in Orissa, Uttar Pradesh (West) and Tamil Nadu.
BSNL’s franchisee project initially ran into difficulties last year, as previously reported by CommsUpdate, when it was claimed that some of the companies that had bid for the contracts existed only on paper, which led to a delay in the operator reissuing the tender. Under the telco’s franchisee model, the selected companies will now be expected to fund and construct WiMAX infrastructure themselves, while BSNL will provide the required spectrum.
