Chinese equipment vendor ZTE has announced that it has been awarded a contract to deploy a trial long term evolution (LTE) network for US-based cellular wholesale company Commnet Wireless.

The network, which will be based on ZTE's core dual-mode CDMA/LTE platform, will cover parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. Xiangyang Jiang, executive president of ZTE North America, said: ‘ZTE is committed to providing US carriers of all sizes with the right technology for successful LTE deployments. Technical-trials, like this partnership with Commnet Wireless, help showcase our core understanding of North American carriers and their technology requirements. As part of this deployment ZTE's technology will allow Commnet Wireless to provide record high speed voice, video and data services via a high-speed 4G LTE network.’ To help fund the project ZTE is teaming with the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority to lobby the state for broadband stimulus funds. Commnet, a regional subsidiary of Atlantic Tele-Network, first applied for stimulus funds last August, but the project was not one of the first 18 initiatives to be approved for funding last month.
