Craig Wireless has announced that it will launch commercial data services over its new WiMAX network covering Vancouver early in the second quarter of this year, with coverage to be expanded to other urban areas in British Columbia and Manitoba provinces soon after, reports Network World Canada.
Services will initially be delivered via fixed outdoor antennas but mobile services including WiMAX-enabled handsets are on the cards by the end of 2010, a company executive claimed. The main selling point will be the internet access speeds available on Craig’s network, which is capable of peak 21Mbps downloads, although users will get an average of around 6Mbps with bursts up to 10Mbps.

By the end of 2010 the WiMAX network should cover one million people, in cities including Winnipeg. Craig Wireless, which is 15%-owned by US-based Clearwire, also aims to agree roaming deals on the US WiMAX networks operated by the latter and Sprint Nextel.
