DiGi longs for additional spectrum to boost coverage
18.03.2010
Malaysia’s third-placed mobile network operator DiGi Telecommunications has said that it needs access to more spectrum in the 900MHz band to allow it to expand its coverage, The Star Online reports.

DiGi chairman Sigve Brekke, noted: ‘We have a little bit of the 900MHz spectrum and we need more. The beauty of the 900MHz spectrum is that it is easier to have nationwide coverage with it, while with 1,800MHz we can easily provide services in the city centre and that is why we need more of the 900MHz spectrum.’

Of the market’s four mobile operators, DiGi reputedly has the smallest frequency allocations. At present DiGi has just 4MHz in the 900MHz band while the largest two cellcos by subscribers, Celcom and Maxis Mobile, hold 34MHz and 32MHz respectively, having each previously acquired smaller rivals to boost their spectrum holdings.
