NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s largest mobile operator by subscribers and revenues, added a net 148,300 new subscribers last month, the biggest gain of any of the country’s cellcos, to reclaim the top spot from Softbank Mobile for the first time in seven months.

DoCoMo said the strong performance was the result of its data communication modems and discount billing programmes which helped entice customers to sign up to its services. Meanwhile Softbank, which is the third largest player by subscribers, added a net 145,800 customers last month, compared to second-placed KDDI Corp with a net gain of 121,400. PHS operator Willcom closed out February with 4.171 million users, down 69,600 on the previous month.
