Draft bill to establish new regulator to be submitted this month
The Bangkok Post reports that after ten months of negotiations the draft bill on allocating broadcast frequencies and the setting up of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has been finalised, and will be submitted to the House of Representatives on 21 January.
The new regulator will have sole authority in deciding who will receive communications frequencies currently mainly controlled by the armed forces, MCOT (a Thai media conglomerate) and state agencies. Assuming the bill passes smoothly through the lower house and then the Senate, it could be signed into law and take effect from the middle of this year.
