Ireland’s former monopoly operator Eircom is reportedly planning to invest EUR20 million (USD24.5 million) in a trial of ultra-high speed fibre-optic broadband services capable of data speeds of up to 150Mbps.
The pilot, which could begin as soon as early 2011, is targeted at 10,000 residences and businesses in Sandyford in County Dublin and in Wexford town. Eircom will use the trial to assess the possible build costs of the network as well as to assess how customers take to the services and applications on offer. The telco will give its rivals access to the technology it said, in the hope that it will encourage them to consider joint rollouts across the country.

The incumbent’s CEO Paul Donovan said: 'This investment underlines Eircom's commitment to test new technologies at scale and will help determine the technological requirements and regulatory frameworks that are necessary across the whole country in support of the future economy for Ireland.'
