Etisalat completes HSPA Plus upgrade

UAE-based telecoms company Emirates Telecommunications Corporation (Etisalat) has reported that it generated revenue of AED7.945 billion (USD2.16 billion) for the three months ended 31 March 2010, representing a 5% increase compared to the AED7.566 billion recorded in the same period a year earlier.
Without providing the year-ago figure, the firm said its net profit in the first quarter of 2010 totalled AED1.994 billion, corresponding to an 8.5% year-on-year decline according to Reuters. Etisalat revealed that its mobile subscriber base amounted to 7.71 million at 31 March 2010, up from 7.341 million a year earlier, while fixed line users totalled 1.3 million and internet customers reached 1.38 million.

The company also announced it had completed upgrading its network to HSPA+ in the UAE’s main cities. The service offers data rates of up to 21Mbps download and 11Mbps upload, and is available to ‘nearly 900,000 of Etisalat’s 3G mobile broadband customers across the country,’ according to company vice president of marketing, Khalifa Al Shamsi.
