Etisalat's Chairman, Mohammad Omran has confirmed that the company is interested in bidding for licenses in Syria and Iraq when they are offered.
The Syrian government has also been considering offering a 3rd mobile license for well over a year, and the Iraqi government recently announced plans for a fourth license.

Etisalat is already in talks to take a stake in the smallest Iraqi operator, Korek Telecom.

"The Iraqi government announced it would issue a fourth license and we expressed our interest," Mohammad Omran told Reuters. "The (Syria) government has announced that it would issue a new license and we also expressed our interest."

Kuwait's Zain was also recently reported to be interested in investing in the Syrian mobile market, either through an acquisition of an operator license, or a stake in an existing operator, Reuters claims.
