Scandinavian telecoms group TeliaSonera has reported that its total net sales in 2009 increased by 5.4% to SEK109.16 billion (USD14.93 billion), up from SEK103.59 billion in 2008, although in local currencies and excluding acquisitions the net revenue figure decreased by 0.3%.
Annual consolidated net income attributable to owners of the parent company was SEK18.85 billion, down by 1% from SEK19.01 billion the previous year, whilst EBITDA, excluding non-recurring items, climbed by 11% to SEK36.67 billion, pushing the EBITDA margin up from 31.8% in 2008 to 33.6% in 2009. CAPEX stood at SEK14.01 billion in 2009, down from SEK15.80 billion the year before, and the group’s CAPEX-to-revenues ratio correspondingly dropped from 15.2% to 12.8%.

In TeliaSonera's Mobility Services division, spread across eight European countries, its customer base continued a steady rise, to 16.96 million cellular customers by the end of 2009, up by 1.06 million in twelve months. In the group's home market of Sweden, mobile subscriptions increased by 330,000 to 5.67 million in a year. The group’s other mobile division, Eurasia, covering eight consolidated units in Asia and eastern Europe, reported that its total subscribers increased by 4.14 million to 22.56 million in January-December, with the star performer being Uzbekistan, where the number of users near-doubled year-on-year to 5.07 million. Eurasia net external sales rose by 12.6% to SEK14.86 billion, compared to Mobility Services’ 5.5% increase to SEK48.80 billion.

Meanwhile, the fixed network division Broadband Services saw much slower subscriber growth, with 64,000 net new high speed internet accounts added in 2009 to take its total to 2.35 million across TeliaSonera’s Scandinavian and Baltic markets. The number of Swedish broadband connections remained virtually flat year-on-year, though, at 1.13 million at end-December 2009, and representing a slight decrease quarter-on-quarter. The division also reported a 128% rise in fixed VoIP subscribers to 228,000, and 141,000 net additions in the IPTV/cable TV segment to reach 798,000 customers. Fixed voice lines, however, continued a slide to 5.21 million in service, down from 5.80 million at end-2008.

TeliaSonera expects total sales in 2010, excluding acquisitions and foreign exchange effects, to be ‘somewhat higher’ than 2009, whilst predicting an increased adjusted EBITDA margin for the year. CAPEX is forecast at below 15% of revenue.
