Vietnamese telecoms operator EVN Telecom has commercially launched its 3G network, becoming the fourth mobile network operator in the country to provide the service, Viet Nam News reports.
EVN has so far invested VND2 trillion (USD104 million) in the installation of around 2,500 base transceiver stations (BTS) in 63 provinces and cities nationwide, covering 46% of the country's population. The company’s deputy director, Vo Quang Lam, said that under the first phase of the rollout plan, EVN will focus on the cities of Hanoi, HCM City, Hai Phong, Da Nang and Can Tho. Under the second phase, the company plans to install more than 5,000 BTS by the end of the year.

EVN is hoping to sign up one million 3G subscribers within one year of launch. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, state-owned cellco Vinaphone was the first to launch third-generation services, in October 2009, followed by MobiFone two months later and military-owned Viettel in March 2010. All four were awarded their 3G licences by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) in April 2009.
