British mobile network operator Hutchison 3G UK (H3G) has announced that it has activated its 10,000th 3G base station as part of a project to expand its existing network.

British mobile network operator Hutchison 3G UK (H3G) has announced that it has activated its 10,000th 3G base station as part of a project to expand its existing network.

The cellco revealed that it had connected the new cell site at Shooters Hill, in south-east London, at the end of last week. The installation of the new site was part of a project under which H3G expects to see its network expand to 13,000 sites nationwide by the end of 2010. The operator also said that the construction of its latest site had increased its 3G coverage to almost 93% of the UK’s population. Commenting on the milestone, Graham Baxter, CTO at H3G, said: ‘Over the past two years the continued growth of internet communications, smartphone use and mobile broadband uptake have brought the need for good 3G network coverage into sharp focus for millions of consumers. Our network is already the biggest 3G network in the UK. Now we’re adding new coverage and capacity across the country to meet demand and bring the benefits of 3G to people who’ve never had access in their area before.’

As previously reported by CommsUpdate, H3G is also in the process of consolidating its 3G network infrastructure with that of rival T-Mobile UK through the Mobile Broadband Network Limited (MBNL) joint venture; the two operators have said that the joint venture will allow them to deliver 3G services to more customers across the UK with around half the number of masts otherwise required.
