Australian alternative broadband provider iiNet is understood to be close to completing two new 10Gbps links from Sydney to Melbourne and north to Brisbane, ZDNet Australia reports.
According to the operator it is just ‘weeks away’ from inaugurating services over the new links, both of which are expected to allow iiNet to expand its services while also reducing the likelihood of network faults.

The news comes hot on the heels of reports that iiNet broadband customers last week had encountered a period of downtime as a result of a network fault, which the operator attributed to an issue ‘related to a [hardware] failure in one of [the company's] core [gigabit switch] routers in Sydney, [which] impacted transmission between Sydney and Brisbane/Melbourne.’

In addition to the two new links that are expected in the near future, iiNet chief technology officer Greg Bader has also indicated that the operator has plans to add a further 10Gbps link between Sydney and Perth within the next six months.
