India's Bharti Airtel has received regulatory approval to buy a controlling 70% stake in Bangladesh's Warid Telecom after pledging to invest US$300 million on upgrading the network. However, neither company has confirmed that a purchase will take place.

"We have asked Bharti Airtel to submit a detailed investment plan for Warid Telecom to BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) within 30 days," BTRC's Chairman Zia Ahmed said.

UAE based Abu Dhabi Group currently owns Warid Telecom, and some reports have suggested that the sale of the 70% stake could be for a negligible amount due to Warid's tiny market share. According to analysis by the Mobile World, the company ended last September with just 2.7 million customers, and a market share of 5.3%.
