Indonesia’s second largest telecoms operator by revenues PT Indosat has selected Ericsson of Sweden to upgrade and modernise its network and, at the same time, unveiled its new Ericsson-supplied HSPA Evolution network, which it says is capable of delivering maximum transmission speeds of 42Mbps – Asia's fastest mobile network.

The network modernisation programme is designed to help Indosat ramp up its efforts to migrate to next generation Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, but will also improve the quality of its infrastructure by introducing features that reduce energy consumption and footprint, making the network more environmentally friendly while reducing operating costs. Under the deal, Ericsson will provide the telco with its Radio Base Station (RBS) 6000, MSS Blade Cluster, and MINI-LINK TN equipment. Network design, deployment, training and support services are also part of the agreement.

TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database writes that Indosat reported a 139.2% year-on-year increase in net profit for the first quarter of 2010 to IDR289.5 billion (USD32 million). The sharp rise in profit was aided by a 2.5% rise in operating income from IDR4.62 trillion to IDR4.73 trillion, in a period in which it boosted its user base by 17.6% to 39.1 million.
