Brazilian telecoms operator Intelig, which was acquired by Telecom Italia-controlled TIM Brasil in late-2009, has concluded a multi-year capacity contract on Intelsat’s IS-14 satellite located at 315 degrees E.
The deal will enable the integrated fixed and mobile operator to use the IS-14 orbiter to expand its network coverage to cover its more than 41 million mobile subscribers. In the past, Intelig has used Intelsat’s satellites to provide an advanced, all-digital nationwide network capable of delivering voice and data services to residential users, businesses and other carriers in areas well beyond its urban strongholds.

“The IS-14 satellite provides us with the coverage we need to support the progression and convergence of cellular services, helping us meet the long-term needs of our growing customer base,” said Leonardo Cifali, Director of Engineering and Operations for Intelig. “The Intelsat system already has enabled us to offer broadband networks to our government customers, provide maximum network efficiency for our enterprise customers and we now look forward to expanding our wireless telephony services to the most remote areas of Brazil.”

“Our satellites provide the world’s leading telecommunication operators the connectivity desired to deliver a wide range of services, such as wireless communications, enabling its growth within remote regions where terrestrial capacity is unavailable or underdeveloped,” said Carmen Gonzalez-Sanfeliu, Intelsat’s Vice President, Latin America & the Caribbean. “Our infrastructure will help extend Intelig’s network to offer better service, support new applications and reach new customers with wireless solutions.”

Intelig is one of the country’s leading providers of local and long-distance data and voice services. It serves more than 25 million consumers and more than 1,000 corporate clients. With the recent incorporation to TIM, Intelig hopes to become a strong competitor in the Brazilian voice and data solutions market.
