Korean Universities commence distance learning projects with Polycom VoIP technologoes
Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) has selected global provider of VoIP and standards-based unified communications (UC) solutions Polycom for deploying UC utility in order to enhance education and visual e-learning by means of newly launched ‘Cyber Convergence Research/Education Improvement Project’.
KISTI is planning to leverage Polycom UC solutions such as the Polycom RealPresence platform to assist Korean students get a much higher quality education and a more interactive research efforts by using provisional visual collaboration technologies to ensure connectivity amongst eight science and engineering universities in the South Korea. According to Polycom, the Polycom RealPresence Platform is the highly sophisticated software infrastructure for universal video integration, embedding Polycom's HD telepresence and VoIP solutions. It completely suits in the UC concept between the foundation layer of essential network and security infrastructure and the services, applications, and device/endpoint layers above it, making the various software elements, which are normally from a range of various vendors, to interoperate smoothly. KISTI nominated the Polycom RealPresence Platform for this project, including the Universal Video Collaboration and Video Content Management components. An operational benefits of the RealPresence platform is the solution’s backward-compatibility with major legacy systems and forward-compatible with next generation emerging systems. It could save KISTI's current IT infrastructure, investments and accelerated ROI. These are the major selection factors mentioned by KISTI as reasons for selecting Polycom. KISTI ensured that it is in fact monitoring growing demand for the technology and more uses of it from broadcasting live lectures to simulating and streaming video discussions in real-time, hosting virtual events and consulting on research and scientific projects. KISTI looks forward to expand the solution to implement it in a much broader spectrum of educational programs, such as second year science and technology projects, and reach a broader network of universities across Korea, in addition to customizing research link-ups between its educators, medical institutions and field researchers.
