The top brass of Macedonia’s incumbent mobile operators T-Mobile Macedonia, ONE (Cosmofon) and Mobilkom Macedonia (VIP Mobile) have set out their joint position that the country is too small for a fourth mobile operator and that the sector is competitive enough already.
The cellcos’ claim comes in the wake of government calls for a new market entrant – an idea which has received the widespread backing of the population who say existing call prices are too high. Kanal5 quotes an unnamed T-Mobile source as saying though that competition is at a high level and a newcomer would struggle to carve out a position given the nation’s small size. ONE meanwhile has adopted a more conciliatory approach to new competition but argues that the market conditions are not right for a new operator to flourish.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, in January this year the government of Macedonia announced that a new tender for the country’s fourth mobile operator could take place before the year end. At the same date it also unveiled plans for two new 3G licences in order to provide further development of the nation’s communications market.
