Russian number three cellco Megafon could become the first in the country to receive a Long Term Evolution (LTE) licence.
A final decision is expected to be taken on 1 June by the State Commission for Radio Frequencies, according to newspaper Kommersant. Kommersant quoted a source within the ministry as saying that the telecoms ministry decided to include the possible allocation of frequencies on the agenda of the 1 June meeting.

Megafon is telecoms partner to the Winter Olympic Games due to be held in Sochi in 2014. Megafon plans to invest more than USD200 million into the region’s infrastructure, as part of its USD260 million contract. The cellco had requested the LTE frequencies in Sochi as a way to test out the system. The State Radio Commission also is planning to discuss the creation of other zones where the new technology can also be tested, including Primorye, Kostroma, Rosotv and Sverdlovsk regions.
