Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed that plans to implement mobile number portability (MNP) in the country will be put in place ‘soon’, giving subscribers the freedom to switch to a new service provider without losing their existing mobile number.
Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed that plans to implement mobile number portability (MNP) in the country will be put in place ‘soon’, giving subscribers the freedom to switch to a new service provider without losing their existing mobile number.

The minister said the move would ‘guarantee quality service and give consumers a choice.’

In October 2009 the country’s sole CDMA operator Kasapa Telecom reiterated its position that it considers MNP as ‘vital’ for the development of the industry in the country and that ‘the years of delay [in implementing it] so far are both inexplicable and inexcusable’. Furthermore, the CDMA operator welcomed Vodafone Ghana’s late entry to the debate, but warned that their joint cause ‘is ill-served by the dissemination of demonstrably false statements’. Kasapa’s statement refers to Vodafone Ghana’s earlier erroneous claim that MNP would not benefit CDMA technology – a mistake the latter subsequently acknowledged and withdrew.
