The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) has revealed that the number of mobile subscribers in the country has reached 2.4 million, local daily The New Times reports.

Statistics from the telecoms regulator show that as of 16 January 2010 market leader MTN Rwanda's wireless customer base had reached 1.8 million, while the mobile operations of fixed line incumbent telco Rwandatel registered 487,250 users. New entrant Millicom Rwanda, which launched operations in November 2009 under the Tigo banner, had signed up 123,897 subscribers by the same date.

‘With Tigo's launch, we are yet to see a rapid increase in subscriber numbers,’ noted Diogene Mudenge, RURA's director general, adding, ‘Rwandatel had a slowdown after a rapid start in acquiring more subscribers but now it has picked up again.’ Mudenge attributed the growth in mobile users to the introduction of new promotions and services by MTN and Rwandatel. He said that RURA is also working with the trio to reduce the price of handsets from RWF8,000 (USD13.8) to RWF2,000, also noting that it hopes to issue a fourth mobile licence in the near future, but only once Millicom Rwanda has signed up around 300,000 subscribers.
