Cairo-based telecoms solution provider Mobiserve has announced it has completed the implementation of the Dubai Metro's WiMAX network, Zawya reports.
The new network, installed on behalf of UAE telecoms operator Du, allows commuters to access the internet on all Wi-Fi enabled devices including smartphones and laptops. Average broadband download speeds at stations are around 4Mbps, while backhauling to the network through WiMAX sees connection speeds of up to 2Mbps (downlink) onboard trains. Work began on the project in June 2009, with implementation at over 20 stations city-wide completed within three months.

‘As the Middle East's first rail line Wi-Fi enabled network, Dubai Metro's WiMAX network marks a real evolution in Dubai's transport by giving commuters truly mobile internet while travelling on the go,’ commented Sameh Atalla, CEO of Mobiserve, adding, ‘The project underscores Mobiserve’s commitment to undertaking innovative initiatives and introducing next generation technologies to end users, as well as partnering with pioneering operators such as Du. We are proud to be part of this important milestone.’
