Moldovan incumbent telco Moldtelecom has posted it results for the year ended 31 December 2009, reporting revenue of MDL2.4 billion (USD188 million), a fall of 9% compared to the same period a year earlier.


After reducing costs by 11% during 2009, however, the company’s profit from operating activities increased 3% year-on-year to MDL384 million. Moldtelecom expects a 4% increase in revenue in 2010 to MDL2.5 billion, while profit is predicted to remain stable compared to 2009.

At the end of 2009 total subscribers reached 1.34 million, including 1.11 million fixed telephony customers, 101,000 mobile users and 133,200 subscribers to the telco’s ‘MaxDSL’ and ‘MaxFiber’ broadband internet services, 32,000 of which were located in rural areas, a figure the company hopes to increase by 20,000 in 2010.

Moldtelecom invested a total of MDL739 million during 2009, MDL156 million of which was spent on the rollout of a 3G network, while MDL55 million was ploughed into the deployment of infrastructure for the company’s new IPTV service and MDL153.3 million was invested in the PSTN. The remainder was spent on laying fibre-optic cable, the rollout of a CDMA network, and information technology. In 2009 Moldtelecom laid approximately 1,700km of fiber-optic cable, to bring the total length of its cable network to 6,700 km. The company plans a major expansion of its optical network in most regional centres and residential districts of Chisinau and Balti in 2010.
