a la Mobile Readies Complete VoIP Linux Stack for Dual-Mode Phones
2007-03-15

a la Mobile, Inc., a Linux systems platform company for mobile phones, today announced the immediate availability of a complete Voice over IP (VoIP) Linux system stack for Wi-Fi/GSM dual-mode phones. Designed for market entry readiness, it is the first of the company's new Made-Ready Series of Linux software offerings tuned for function-centric mobile phones.
"The idea of a series of Made-Ready Linux solutions is a la Mobile's direct response to a number of requests from handset vendors interested in completely integrated Linux system stacks that are particularly well-tuned for a specific function, and that are ready to go to market with little or no modifications," said Pauline Lo Alker, president and CEO at a la Mobile, Inc. "With the increasing market interests in dual-mode phones tuned for VoIP, it is a 'no brainer' for us to offer it as the first of our Made-Ready Series of function-centric Linux solutions."
Driven by today's mobile workforce combined with increasing demand for 'non-stop' high-speed access, Wi-Fi hot spots are springing up everywhere: in hotels, airports, coffee shops and throughout entire metropolitan cities. A recent report by Juniper Research, a market research firm, predicts that the worldwide VoWi-Fi (Voice-over-Wi-Fi) handsets will grow to almost US billion by 2012 with the vast majority being dual-mode handsets. According to the report authored by Basharat Hamid Ashai, research analyst at Juniper Research, the handset market is moving to a stage where no one wants to carry two or three devices in their pocket, so the ability to have a single device for all calls is a compelling proposition.
Based on the company's Convergent Linux System Platform (CLP), a la Mobile's VoIP Made-Ready Linux Solution is a pre-integrated full-featured software stack that supports both Wi-Fi and GSM with an integrated SIP-based VoIP client, a browser, Java, Adobe Flash and a core suite of applications such as phonetop, media, messaging and email.
"The idea is to enable handset customers to bring dual-mode phones to market readily with no delays, while also giving them the peace-of-mind that the stack is completely integrated, tested, supported and maintained," Alker added. "In the upcoming months, we expect to introduce additional Made-Ready Linux solutions tuned for other function-centric mobile handsets."
About Convergent Linux Platform
a la Mobile's Convergent Linux is the only complete operating system (OS) for mobile phones with an entirely open and configurable platform. It is also the first mobile OS platform that enables a single software stack in binary form to move across different handsets -- even those based on processors from different manufacturers -- without tedious and costly porting or modifications, thereby dramatically accelerating time-to-market and ensuring device software interoperability. The open nature of Convergent Linux provides handset manufacturers with the opportunity to choose the software components, functionality and device look-and-feel that are best-suited for their target customers. Furthermore, says the company, the platform is a full and complete mobile software stack (from device drivers and Linux kernel to middleware and applications): integrated; tested; certified; supported; and maintained, giving manufacturers the peace-of-mind to roll-out new product families based on the Linux operating system.
