AKTEL pays fine for illegal VoIP provision

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has fined cellco AKTEL, a subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia, BDT1.45 billion (USD21.5 million) for its involvement in the illegal provision of VoIP call termination. BTRC Chairman Manzurul Alam told local newspaper The Daily Star that AKTEL had already paid BDT72.5 billion to the national exchequer. Previously, rivals GrameenPhone and Banglalink also agreed to pay ‘compensation’ to the government for loss of state revenues caused by the unlicensed usage of VoIP telephony, whilst the state has filed similar lawsuits against others including cellco CityCell and fixed-wireless PSTN operator Bay Phones. Telekom Malaysia International said in a statement: ‘The company has recently agreed to compensate the Bangladesh government for the 'lost revenue' attributed [to] the misuse of some [AKTEL] subscribers.’
