Alarm.com Signs VOIP Deal; Looks Next To ISPs
2006-09-21

Alarm.com has signed its second VOIP partnership deal, with SunRocket. Executives said they're looking ahead to partnerships with ISPs, providing yet another tier of service to existing "triple play" relationships.
Alarm.com, which has also signed a similar partnership with Vonage, will offer SunRocket customers a $ 100 discount on an Alarm.com installation and equipment, by using the company's dedicated Web page.
Since Alarm.com's system does not use an analog phone line to report data, including break-ins and other authorized and unauthorized accesses, the partnership with VOIP providers was a natural, said Mary Knebel, Alarm.com's vice president of business development. Data is passed wirelessly to Alarm.com's center of operations, where the data is passed to customers via a mobile device or via a PC.
The company has marketed itself as a wireless security firm, but the company also can install sensors inside the home, to prevent children from accessing cabinets where potentially hazardous chemicals could be stored.
By using wireless technology in transmitting the signals, it addresses the vulnerability of the analog phone line," Knebel said. While traditional providers have used analog lines, "they can be disabled with a scissors," she said.
Currently, however, Alarm.com's system uses a GSM wireless connection to communicate data, Knebel said. Beginning next month, however, the company will beta-test a hybrid communicator that uses both conventional wired broadband as well as the wireless connection.
Alarm.com is touting the relationship as one that is beneficial to the consumer, and also allows an additional service to be joined to VOIP. The next step? Additional deals with other VOIP players, and then explorations with broadband providers themselves.
Currently, ISPs offer what's known as a "triple play" of services: cable or DSL-based broadband, phone or VOIP offerings, as well as television services. "Quad-tier" services are expected to add cellular phone service, and security systems like Alarm.com could add a fifth tier into the mix, providing even more revenue for the ISP.
"We definitely see that for ISPs, or anyone providing Internet connections to homes and for businesses, to run the signal over broadband makes it more efficient for the consumer," Knebel said.
Alarm.com is scheduled to talk with CableLabs, the U.S. R&D consortium of cable companies, to discuss the possibilities, Knebel said.
Alarm.com is owned by MicroStrategy, a manufacturer of business support or "intelligence" software.
