Convergence/VoIP Predictions for 2007
2007-01-04

Today, we dust off the crystal ball and share our top 10 predictions for convergence and VoIP in 2007.
1. More service providers and infrastructure suppliers will converge; we expect further consolidation among the major players that offer and supply IP services and equipment.
2. The IP contact center will get increased focus, and we will see additional, customized offerings from service providers targeting the small and midsize business market.
3. Adding integrated IP services like VoIP and Internet access will become the standard for metro Ethernet services but metro Ethernet coverage that connects distant metro areas will continue to be sparse.
4. Fixed-mobile convergence will benefit from the 2005-2006 build out of mobile data networks and we will see actual services targeting enterprise vertical markets emerge in 2007.
5. Cable companies in the United States will use their partnership with Sprint to offer “mobile entertainment” but the cable companies will see little traction as just another third party mobile voice supplier.
6. Nationally franchised TV licenses will move forward but be challenged in the courts; the resulting decision either way will add fuel to the battle between the cable companies and the phone companies.
7. ‘Net neutrality will be “legislated” in favor of keeping the Internet neutral but the legislation will also end in the courts for a final decision; Google will become a full-fledged Internet access and VoIP provider. Either way the courts decide.
8. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) interoperability will continue to progress slowly and IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) deployments will be even slower.
9. Professional services supplied by equipment companies and service providers will become critical to the enterprise deployments of advanced features and office IP-applications integration. 10. Microsoft will finally be seen by the enterprise as a credible alternative to traditional VoIP suppliers as Vista becomes more widely deployed and as businesses become more comfortable with Microsoft’s Live Communications Server.
Best wishes to all for a happy and successful 2007.
