Dutch VoIP users almost triple to 1.8 mln

Dutch subscribers of Internet-based calling, or Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services, almost tripled to 1.8 million in 2006, according to a survey released on Friday.
Dutch telecoms group KPN and the cable companies showed the fastest growth, Dutch market research group Telecompaper estimated, with VoIP users reaching nearly 1.8 million at the end of 2006 from 655,000 in 2005.
KPN added more than 500,000 subscribers, while the cable companies added more than 400,000, the research group said.
"The market share of digital telephony services on the Dutch consumer market approached 30 percent, leaving still 70 percent for the traditional PSTN and ISDN services," the research firm said in a statement.
Growth in mobile-only households slowed in 2006, amounting to almost 18 percent of households at the end of the year.
