Expert warns VoIP as vulnerable to viruses as other IT

There are three ways in which users can improve their VoIP security, expert John Edwards has said.
Writing in VoIP news, Mr Edwards said users should link their VoIP to a virtual private network (VPN) to protect against viruses.
Emphasising that the technology used in VoIP shares the characteristics of other IT applications and can therefore be attacked by the same viruses, especially if connected to the internet, he said a VPN "will effectively separate the VoIP network from the underlying data network", which isolates the system from any viruses which hit the remainder of the network.
He also recommended that specialist systems designed specifically for VoIP be used, such as firewalls, as well as warning that use of unauthorised hosted IP technologies can expose systems to risk.
The importance of IT security has been underlined by news that security software revenue in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region will hit £1.6 billion this year, according to a study by research group Gartner, vnunet.com reports.
