Far Reach Pioneering New Mobile VoIP Technology 2006-10-25
Far Reach Technologies is the first service provider to productize and announce widescale deployment plans for Sarasota, Fla.-based xG Technology's proprietary and highly provocative wireless technology and services known as xMax. Following a successful beta trial set to launch in January, Far Reach will begin rolling out Internet-based mobile VoIP to customers in Florida's Volusia County area for a flat rate of $ 39.95 in March 2007.

Far Reach Technologies intends to continue deploying service in a total of 76 markets in eight states starting in the second quarter of 2007, says Russ White, president of the Daytona Beach, Fla.-based Internet service provider. Internet and data services will be introduced in November 2007, and IPTV will be added to the offering in 2008, he adds.

In addition to new proprietary mobile phones and an Internet-based network, which are being built for Far Reach by xG, the beta trial will test the xG's unlicensed, low-power yet far-reaching wireless xMax technology, which White heralds as the "greatest technical advance in RF communications in the last 100 years."

White and his team of expert RF engineers recently traveled to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. for a demonstration of xG's "revolutionary" RF modulation technique called single-cycle modulation. As part of the demonstration, xG transmitted the wireless xMax signal of streaming video three miles, using 3 milliwatts of power to an off-the-shelf laptop. The ultra-low power demo was a big hit with the team.

"When they saw it they were amazed," says White. "It's a conceptually fantastic model."

Far Reach Technologies is "keen" to take xG's xMax technology and service to market because putting everything on the Internet is where the marketplace is going, he says. And neither WiFi or WiMAX will ever be able to achieve what xMax can, he adds.

In fact, a recent Research and Markets report on the future of mobile voice claims that mobile networks are not evolving fast enough to match subscriber expectations for rock bottom voice prices. When xG publicly unveiled its new RF modulation technique about a year ago, its inventor and others in the company said pretty much the same thing while pointing to xMax as the cure for this problem. Far Reach Technology's deployment of xMAX is xG's opportunity to show its technology really is the next step in mobile voice's evolution.

Any problems with delay, dropped calls or poor quality that one might expect to run into when delivering voice over the Internet will be eradicated in the design of the network, says White. The proprietary handsets, which will become more feature rich as the service is rolled out, will appeal to people looking for a lower-cost, better-quality mobile voice experience, he adds. White declined to comment on any plans to add the xG chip to PDAs or other communications devices.

Just where the roll out is headed after Volusia County is under wraps, says White. The way the technology currently works, only one provider can use it in any given coverage area. White says his deal with xG grants him exclusive rights to provide service in the serving areas his deal specifies.

xG is encouraging other service providers to follow in Far Reach's footsteps. Starting in July, xG Technology began accepting applications for its xMax Domestic Dealer Program, which was designed to facilitate nationwide deployment of xMax by awarding exclusive territories to regional carriers for deployment of the technology and service.

With xG Technology, an xMax regional carrier could deliver a carrier-grade quality mobile VoIP service for thousands of dollars, not the millions that other technologies require in capital network and spectrum licensing costs, according to Rick Mooers, chairman and CEO of xG Technology.
