Fax Adding to Value of VoIP Networks
2007-04-23

Fax over IP networks is gaining credibility as a viable business fax solution, as organizations swap out old PBX systems for IP-enabled ones, according to a White Paper titled “Boardless Fax Servers in VoIP Environments” by FaxBack Inc. The White Paper, which reviews the technical aspects of NET SatisFAXtion IP fax software, said that fax remains the preferred method to transmit sensitive business-critical documents. As a result, there is high interest from businesses to leverage their IP infrastructure network by integrating fax into their VoIP network, making it possible do away with standalone fax machines or outdated fax servers. Although fax machines remain a staple of many companies, larger businesses have transitioned to network faxing, which provides greater security and simplifies tracking while saving on printing costs. Fax software has enabled organization to manage higher fax volumes by spreading the fax load across a company’s IP network. The paper states that leading IP gateways, including Cisco, 3Com, and Alcatel, have built-in support for fax. The fax over IP standards include T.38 real-time faxing and T.37 store and forward faxing. Both use the current standard T.30 fax definition to identify the data being transferred by either method. Because leading IP gateways support T.38, integrating fax into a VoIP environment offers the advantage of being able to eliminate dedicated fax boards—enabling organizations to reap significant cost benefits. For instance, the cost of deploying its NET SatisFAXtion IP boardless fax over IP solution would be zero, compared to at $10,000 for a fax board, not counting installation andPBX hardware line card costs. A NET SatisFAXtion IP solution can typically be installed in less than an hour—faster than other fax over IP solutions, the paper said. Because the solution can be installed rapidly, there’s no need to shut down the server as is the case when installing traditional fax hardware, the paper said. The paper noted that NET SatisFAXtion integrates seamlessly with corporate e-mail systems such as Microsoft Exchange, so that incoming faxes are received directly and securely to a users’ inbox. Faxes are received as .pdf and .tiff attachments, which can be easily clicked and viewed online.
