Hackers 'to target VoIP users'

Those using online
phones and instant message services will be prime targets for hackers
next year, says one of the world's largest security firms.
MessageLabs today released its security threat predictions for next year, and observed that hackers were developing far more sophisticated methods to get around protection software.
It said that this year there had been a clear trend for hackers to use a converged approach - email, websites and instant messaging (IM) programs - to target users, but added that next year IM would become an even bigger target.
"As the convergence of attacks continue into 2007, IM will continue to be a target through spam ... and the spoofing of IM identities to lure users into disclosing data," it said.
Online telephony systems - known as "voice over internet protocol" or VoIP services - will also increasingly be targeted.
"2007 will see VoIP become a prime target for phishing attacks whereby spoof phone calls are made to victims to extract their credit card details or steal their identity using third party software," it said.
Email spam will continue to proliferate, said MessageLabs, but these will be sent through as images rather than easily detectable text messages.
"[Image] spam will become much more prevalent, due to the inability of traditional spam filter software to detect minute changes in the image email."
Of course, traditional Trojan viruses won't disappear any time soon, and MessageLabs said that it was now even possible to order one's own custom-made viruses over the internet.
It expected the use of these "Trojan supermarkets" to grow as prices dropped.
"Primarily based in Russia, criminals can order a customised Trojan for as little as $250, which will be altered to their needs."
