Igel packs VoIP into first quad-screen thin clients 2006-10-10
Thin client maker Igel technology has added new terminals to form what it claims is the broadest range in the world. The new models add capabilities such as voice over IP (VoIP) and the ability to support multiple monitors – features previously considered impractical for thin clients.

Available immediately, Igel’s three new thin clients are the ProScribe, a pen-driven tablet-style device; the Elegance, a terminal integrated into a 17in flat-screen monitor; and the PanaVeo, which supports up to four displays.

All three models are based on Windows XP Embedded (XPE). The Elegance and PanaVeo are also available in Linux versions with a built-in VoIP client.

The PanaVeo is unique in its quad-screen support, according to Igel worldwide marketing director Stephen Yeo. Users can have separate sessions on each screen, or combine them to make one large desktop with a resolution of up to 2048x1536 pixels, which makes the PanaVeo capable of handling applications such as computer-aided design (CAD), radiology imaging, and stock market trading. The Linux version allows traders to make VoIP calls using its SIP-compatible client. Prices start at £579.

The £565 Elegance is aimed at public environments such as reception areas. Its 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connectivity and the Linux version’s VoIP client allow for interactive kiosks where clients can speak to a call centre.

The ProScribe has a 12in screen and Wi-Fi. Prices start at £919.
