In Case of Emergency: VoIP Providers Can Locate Your Cubicle
2007-03-21

With the increased adoption of VoIP telephony — and the natural mobility it offers with its plug-and-play type endpoints — emergency services providers are faced with a daunting task. With the E911 requirements placed upon carriers and service providers, it becomes essential that they have available services that can track and monitor VoIP endpoints, so that if an emergency call is places, emergency services can be appropriately dispatched. In fact, before dispatching, it is equally important that the call is routed to the proper emergency operator. To assist service providers with this difficult — yet, incredibly important — task, 911 Enable (through its parent, Connexon Telecom) and eTelemtry have entered into a strategic partnership that will provide an E911 compliant VoIP asset tracking solution. 911 Enable’s FCC, CRTC, and NENA compliant solutions facilitate connectivity between IP endpoints and the appropriate emergency services network in the United States and Canada. eTelemetry offers its Locate911 service, which is automated IP phone tracking system. It is designed to match IP phones to the switch ports into which they are plugged — meaning this information is automatically updated when the phone is moved to a different location. This is one of the key elements of VoIP service, and has been among the most difficult for E911 services to handle. Locate911 also pulls the user’s name from the company directory, providing more detail for emergency services personnel. “Locate911 and 911 Enable are a perfect match. Together we can offer a total e911 compliant solution that is easy to deploy and substantially less expensive than other e911 solutions,” says eTelemetry CEO Ermis Sfakiyanudis. With 911 Enable’s emergency routing services and eTelemetry’s asset tracking, emergency situations can be much more efficiently handled — even more so than with traditionalPSTN service, where only the user’s address is known. In this case, the user’s specific location within an office lets emergency personnel know precisely where to go, addressing a major bone of contention with E911 service providers.
