Jajah Launches Its Direct 'VoIP Without A PC' Service 2007-11-20
The company has installed 260 switches in 66 countries with the financial and technical help of Intel and Deutsche Telekom.

Jajah, the telecom provider whose users don't need a computer, introduced Jajah Direct Monday. The service, which delivers free or low-rate international calls, now includes local access numbers in major U.S. cities and in several countries.

In an interview Monday, Jajah's co-founder and president Roman Scharf, said the company has installed 260 switches in 66 countries in keeping with its strategy of avoiding the high costs of existing telecommunications structures as it develops its own infrastructure.

"The switches and server farms in New York City, London, Tel Aviv, and Tokyo are master VoIP controllers," Scharf said, adding that by developing its own infrastructure it can pass on savings to customers rather than to middlemen wholesalers. "We buy local lines," he said. "We're doing everything but the last mile."

Jajah has major backing from Intel (NSDQ: INTC) and Deutsche Telekom, which operates T-Mobile in the U.S.

Noting that no computer or device beyond a standard phone is required for the service, Scharf said its home-grown infrastructure enables it to deliver the service directly to users. To use Jajah Direct, a consumer calls an access number and calls a destination phone number upon hearing a dial tone. The originator of the call is immediately connected to the destination number dialed. The first call is free.

Users receive a local number for each "friend" or "colleague" called and the number is sent to the call originator, usually via text message. The numbers are stored in a phone or address book and those numbers are called free or at reduced rates in the future. "We build a virtual address book for you," said Scharf. Many calls are free while others are billed at about 2.5 or 3 cents a minute. The service covers 122 countries.

Repeat customers typically are free. Comparing Jajah with current VoIP pacesetters Skype and Vonage, Scharf said Jajah users don't need a broadband connection, don't need to sign any complex extended agreements, don't need any special devices or headphones and don't need to download any software.

"We don't want you to quit your existing phone company," said Scharf. "With Jajah you complement your existing phone company." He added that the service appeals to people making international phone calls that currently may be costing at least 50 and 75 cents a minute. At last count a few months ago, Jajah had signed up more than four million users and he said people are currently signing up at an accelerating rate.
