Latin America holds vast VoIP potential

The Latin Business Chronicle reports that Frost & Sullivan's Alex Zago estimates a rise in VoIP penetration over broadband of 25.5 per cent in 2011, compared with the current figure of 1.5 per cent.
In turn, the market's value would reach around $ 1.1 billion – a far cry from the relatively negligible number seen in 2005. It is thought that Brazil would make up 49 per cent of the projected market, with Mexico and the rest of the continent forming the remainder.
The most advanced VoIP market in the region, however, can currently be found in Chile, which at 2.3 per cent has the largest penetration of VoIP over broadband in Latin America.
With the market, as Mr Zago points out, having effectively begun in 2005 in these countries there is much groundwork to be put in and plenty of progress to be made – but big regional operators like Intelig of Brazil and Chilean firm Entel look set to make forays into the market imminently and spark an upsurge from which there could be no turning back.
