Mitel to use BorderWare's SIPassure VoIP Security Solution in its 3600 Security Gateway

By combining BorderWare’s SIPassure and Mitel’s 3600 Hosted Key System, the two companies will deliver to the market a carrier-grade gateway which “opens the door to secure, low-cost delivery of business quality VoIP services over public IP networks.”
“Powered by BorderWare, the Mitel 3600 Security Gateway is embedded with application layer security reducing the barriers to VoIP adoption by providing a truly secure solution for VoIP deployment over public IP networks that is more robust, less expensive and simpler to manage than standard industry solutions which operate at the packet layer,” a press release from BorderWare states. “The Mitel 3600 Security Gateway securely enables and protects Session Initiation Protocol-based (SIP) and MiNET (Mitel’s proprietary voice protocol)-based VoIP signaling and transport, and sets a new standard of affordability for carrier and service provider markets.”
The combined solution is said to provide application layer security to protect against SPIT (Spam over Internet Telephony), Denial of Service, Unauthorized Registration and other types of VoIP attacks which would easily penetrate packet-layer security devices.
Doug Michaelides, vice president of global marketing for Mitel, said the new gateway delivers VoIP security “at a fraction of the cost of more complex, generic session border controllers.”
“We see this as an integration of expertise,” added Tim Leisman, CEO of BorderWare. “Mitel’s expertise in IP telephony is well known and well regarded, and they selected BorderWare based on our 12 years of experience and expertise in IP security. Together, we’re delivering a hosted VoIP solution that is more secure, simpler to operate and radically more cost-effective for VoIP service providers.”
In addition to protecting SIP-based applications such as VoIP, video and IM, SIPassure combines key features of three technologies - Session Border Control (SBC), an Application Layer Gateway (ALG) and a SIP/VoIP Firewall – thus enabling VoIP traffic to traverse the network while keeping core infrastructure free from external malicious threats.
Mitel made news on Tuesday when it announced an agreement with Bandwidth.com to bundle its 3300 IP Communications Platform (ICP) with Bandwidth.com’s nationwide SIP Trunking service.
The company, which has apparently been quite busy lately, also announced on Monday that it has enhanced communications between the Alaska-based Residential Mortgage head office in Anchorage and its geographically dispersed employees across the state. Partnering with Foundry Networks Inc and TekMate, Mitel has implemented its Teleworker Solution to improve business efficiencies for better customer service.
