More companies moving to VOIP in Western Europe

In terms of IP telephone shipments, 3Q 06 saw an increase of 15.7% over the previous quarter. Cisco had the highest market share and saw its unit market share grow from 33.7% in 2Q06 to 34.2% in 3Q06.
Avaya was in second place, while Alcatel was third. Compared to 2005, Alcatel is clearly increasing its market share in the Western European IP telephone market. The Western European IP PBX market was worth $ 393.6 million in the third quarter. The total number of IP lines shipped during the period was over 1.4 million.
About 58% was shipped to the medium-sized company segment (50 to 249 employees), while 24% was shipped to the large company segment (more than 250 employees). IDC noted that 18% of IP line shipments was to the small company segment (0 to 49 employees), as this segment shows increased interest in IP telephony.
Government and communications were the vertical markets with the most activity in 3Q 06.
IDC's Western European IP PBX and IP Telephone Tracker showed gradual growth for IP telephony revenue, as this combined market reached total revenue of $ 580 million in 3Q 06, up 4.3% from 2Q06.
"Overall 3Q06 was a quarter of steady growth for the European IP PBX and IP telephone market. Every quarter we see the number of IP PBX and IP telephone sales growing. Apart from the replacement of TDM infrastructure we can see that this growth is driven by employees' need to communicate with each other more efficiently," said Rogier Mol, senior analyst for IDC's European VoIP Infrastructure research service.
