New VoIP business plan: Sell to swingers and cheaters 2007-01-18
VoIP companies need some way to make a profit, and now one has come up with a unique business plan: Sell service to self-styled swingers and men who want to cheat on their wives.

The Shadow Number service, powered by the VoIP company TalkPlus, allows people to create a second number for their cell phone, completely separate from any other number. Voicemail, billing, and everything else is entirely separate, so no one else using the phone will have any idea there is a separate phone line.

The Shadow Number web site makes it clear exactly who is the target audience. There's a cartoon of a 1960's style swinger, straight out of the Rat Pack days, set against the silhouettes of several naked women.

Just in case you don't get the point, the company's testimonial page has comments like this one: "Ok, so I play around a little, you know, now and then. I have to be very discrete. My new ShadowNumber is the best thing since... well, whatever. It lets me be who I want to be without any concern about prying ears and eyes."

Here's another one: "I want the number I give out to people to reflect the city in which I meet them - I think that many women won't call me back on an out-of-state number for whatever reason."

The GigaOM blog includes comments from TalkPlus CEO Jeff Black, who explains, "Shadow number is our brand for the alternative market. We are uncomfortable with putting our TalkPlus name, and are using the Shadow Number."

What exactly is the "alternative market? GigaOM reports that it's the "adult market." One would assume that a big part of that market is also for connecting to for-pay, adult chat services.

What's next in the VoIP market? Heavy-breathing moans in the Vonage ads instead of the intensely annoying "Whoo-hooo"?
