Online VoIP Not User-Friendly Enough for Mass Market

A recent survey of VoIP users, conducted by Forrester Research, indicates that most internet-based calling services are too complicated to achieve wide appeal in the consumer mass market.
Forrester analyst, Zayera Khan, explained in his report, entitled The VoIP Consumer Experience: Work In Progress, that most mainstream consumers are bewildered by the constant stream of icons, buttons, rollovers, and navigation features that come standard with most online VoIP applications.
Khan concludes that leading internet VoIP providers like Skype, Yahoo, Microsoft, and Google, have yet to develop services that are truly user-friendly.
“Icons, graphics, buttons, rollovers and navigation menus are not clearly symbolized, which leads to confusion when trying to discern whether a phone symbol represents voice or video calling, for instance,” the report explains. “Mainstream consumers worry about privacy and security policies because they are not displayed on all relevant pages.”
