Orange and Vodafone Cripple VoIP on UK Nokia N95 2007-04-19
Picture 2To any of our UK readers thinking about buying a Nokia N95: Avoid Vodafone and Orange. They have switched off the VoIP capabilities.

The two companies have not only left out the VoIP applications but pulled all the software hooks out which would let third party software integrate. Of course, as there is still an internet connection you can run something like Fring on top but it's a kludgy workaround.

This is the first time I have heard of something so drastic in the UK market. US consumers are used to the carriers monkeying with their handsets, disabling Bluetooth for instance in order to sell more MMS, but aside from locking phones to carriers, the Brits have been fairly free of crippled features.

Over and over we see big companies trying to hold onto their business models by stifling innovation. All they really achieve is frustration and bad will from their customers.

We have a video comparison of the of an Orange N95 vs an unlocked one after the jump, courtesy of the folks at mobile VoIP provider Truphone.
