Ottawa company bags VoIP award

An Ottawa company
that is keeping nimbly ahead of tech giant Microsoft Corp. has won an
award for its voice-over-Internet-protocol product.
Internet Telephony magazine has named Objectworld Communications Corp.'s UC Server as a recipient of a 2006 product of the year award.
Shipping since March 2006, UC Server is a low-cost, all-in-one VoIP phone system integrated with Microsoft Windows. The product delivers VoIP, unified messaging and unified communications.
'Powerful' Tools
"UC Server cuts costs, enhances productivity and allows customers to take control of their phone systems with simple but powerful administration and productivity tools, including seamless, real-time integration with Microsoft Active Directory and a point-and-click service creation environment," Objectworld said in a statement.
Steve Grassie, VP of business development and marketing at Objectworld, said the company decided two years ago to "change direction to match Microsoft's vision."
First Out Of Gate
The result has been that Objectworld was first out of the gate with its all-software product, aimed largely at companies with 500 employees or fewer, Grassie said.
"We're ahead of Microsoft because Microsoft has yet to bring something to market," he said, adding a similar product from the titan would likely be aimed at larger clients, with technology from a company like Nortel or Mitel.
Objectworld management has been to Microsoft headquarters to demonstrate the product. Grassie couldn't say whether Microsoft would be interested in snapping up another promising young Ottawa company.
