Skype Ouch: A New VOIP Patent Could Be A Big Barrier In The Mobile World
2007-06-05

Seasoned Internet CEO files new patent for Mobile VOIP technology enabling VOIP calls from any mobile. Skype and other VOIP businesses expansion at risk.
Mark Ismach recently filed a patent covering a method for allowing mobile phone users to place VOIP calls directly from their mobile phone. The strength of this patent relies in the fact that every mobile phone, even the oldest ones, will be able to place VOIP calls.
Mark Ismach is not a newbie when it comes to the Internet. Mr. Ismach's career also comprises of being CEO and President of a public company as well as President of several private companies. He has over 30 years of business experience in the technology field and has been deeply involved in the Internet since the mid 1990's.
In 1994 Mr. Ismach, who had previously registered the trademark "BIOS", stopped Phoenix Technologies from using the word "BIOS" on its products. Phoenix was using the word "BIOS" in almost every computer in the world that was being produced. Phoenix was forced to remove the word "BIOS" from its products when the USPTO upheld Ismach's trademark in Cancellation No. 21,866.
This time Mr. Ismach has found an opportunity in the VOIP business. His patent allows everyone with a mobile phone, no matter how old or unsophisticated the mobile phone is, to place VOIP calls anywhere in the world at very low VOIP prices without having to type a long series of complex numbers. The mobile user doesn't even need to remember the phone number of the person he is calling. Everything is done with the touch of a few buttons.
Mr. Ismach is looking for investors willing to fund the project. Initially $50,000 investment increments are available. The business plan is to first develop a Skype plugin that will offer this functionality to all Skype users, then when the product becomes popular, sell the patent to either Skype, Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger or Google Talk and choose which VOIP system will dominate the world of mobile communications.
Currently Skype has the most to lose if either AOL (AIM), Microsoft (MSN), Yahoo or Vonage purchase this patent.
