Skype to Make Possible Verbal Chatrooms

Skype Thursday gave a glimpse into the future of voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) services. It unveiled its first public beta version of the much-hyped Skype 3.0.
This version includes features that enable users to post a link on a blog or Web site that will bring users to a large public chat room or a voice-based conference call.
The capabilities, called Public Chats and Skypecasts respectively, are expected to be launched commercially soon, although the company did not reveal a timeline.
With Public Chats, Internet users can create their own text chat rooms or join rooms created by others. Moderators direct conversation topics, expel users and determine who can take part in the chats.
Skypecasts are voice-based and can handle up to 100 users at a time.
"Both Public Chats and Skypecasts help many online buddies at the same community site communicate instantly," said Beh Dong-chul, an executive at Korea''s top online auctioneer, Internet Auction.
"The public chat services would be a perfect fit for Koreans since so many social-networking community sites flourish here," Beh said.
Auction is presently providing VoIP services in Korea under a business alliance with Skype, which was snapped up by Auction''s parent company EBay last year.
Also included in the service package is Click-to-Call, which allows Internet users to make a phone call directly from a Web page to other Skype users or to regular phones.
"When people searched for a flower shop online, they had to pick up a phone to place a call to it, in the past. But you don''t have to do that with Click-to-Call," Beh said.
