Tekelec 6000 VoIP Application Server Offers Disaster Recovery for Hurricane Season
2006-08-23

Tekelec has announced that the Tekelec 6000 VoIP Application Server now includes disaster recovery features that help service providers deliver reliable communications services to their subscribers during the hurricane season. The server re-routes all IP phone calls to a wireline or mobile phone automatically if an operator’s network is disrupted by high winds, flooding or other problems. The Tekelec 6000 architecture also enables operators to locate their system servers, session border controllers and streamers in geographically diverse locations to ensure no single points of failure and continued operation because of extreme weather conditions. The 2006 hurricane season is expected to be very active, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has already forecasted 13-16 storms that could result in four to six major hurricanes. The Tekelec 6000 helped the Louisiana-based RazorLine, LLC and Florida-based Vortex Broadband to keep their services up and running during hurricanes. RazorLine had set up VoIP services over temporary wireless Internet connections during Hurricane Katrina, and relied on the server to offer reliable VoIP features throughout the storm. "During and after Hurricane Katrina, customers relied on us to provide their communications lifeline to loved ones and important services that helped them get their lives back on track,” said Gene Dry, managing partner, RazorLine. “It is our commitment to do everything possible to deliver reliable, uninterrupted services even in the most inclement weather situations, and the Tekelec 6000 VoIP Application Server provides critical disaster recovery features that help our customers stay connected.” “The Tekelec 6000 enabled us to keep VoIP services up and running for at least 85 percent of our customers even with 125 mph hurricane winds,” said Todd Shepherd, president and founder of Vortex Broadband. The company relied on the server to support its fixed wireless-based VoIP, Internet and VPN services in Florida during Hurricane Wilma. “During a natural disaster, operators rely on a solutions provider that helps them deliver communication services with minimal interruptions and quickly recover services in the event of a network outage,” said Jay Whitehurst, president and general manager of the Tekelec Switching Solutions Group. “The Tekelec 6000’s disaster recovery features have been proven with operators such as RazorLine and Vortex to provide reliable VoIP services for their subscribers to stay connected with loved ones and emergency services.”
